AI-Powered Media Tagging: Interview with Molly Presley on Data Unchained

At this year’s NAB Conference, Molly Presley of Hammerspace interviewed our CEO about broader industry trends driving demand for our software. Media tagging has always been a labor-intensive task in the media and entertainment (M&E) industry, and traditional methods, often relying on interns to manually tag media with descriptors like “blond hair” or “car crash,” were never really practical. Enter Axle AI, whose software is transforming the way media is tagged, making the process faster and more efficient.

Axle AI’s software fills this gap by leveraging AI to automate image tagging. This innovation has proven to be a game-changer in media management.

Axle AI offers both on-premise (Axle AI Platform) and cloud-native (Axle AI Cloud) versions of our software to meet the varying needs of organizations. This flexibility ensures that Axle AI is there for you, whether you prefer on-premise or cloud-based solutions.

The pandemic accelerated the shift to remote working and cloud-based AI. However, concerns about data privacy and the rising cost of public cloud storage are leading to a return to on-premise data centers and hybrid cloud strategies. Organizations such as film studios, corporations, and government agencies benefit greatly from using AI to securely tag media, making their workflows more efficient.

The democratization of media has also increased the need for efficient tagging. With the vast amounts of data generated by smartphones and social media platforms, the need for automated tagging solutions has never been greater. Professional markets, from broadcasters to post-production teams, need robust tagging solutions to effectively manage their extensive media libraries, and social media is driving demand for many more versions of each piece of content.

For a deeper dive into the challenges and solutions in media management, check out the latest episode of Data Unchained with Molly Presley.

Axle AI and Cloudian Introduce AI-powered MAM Solution for Hybrid Cloud Environments

Joint offering brings together highly scalable, industry-standard object storage and the power of AI to accelerate media management across on-premises and cloud environments

Axle AI, Inc., the leader in providing AI-powered media search (NAB booth SL10061), and Cloudian, the leader in S3-compatible hybrid data lake platforms (NAB booth SL6034), today announced a hybrid cloud solution that ensures data sovereignty, reduces costs, and simplifies media workflows by letting users store content where it’s needed — on-prem or in the cloud — while maintaining single-point management and unified media search. Using AI-powered tools, the solution catalogs manages, and searches media across on-prem and cloud-based storage for simple and immediate access regardless of where content is stored.

As users seek to optimize data sovereignty, security, and storage costs, they are increasingly looking to balance their use of on-prem and cloud-based compute and storage platforms. The resulting distribution of media creates a challenge when users seek to manage media across the storage landscape and quickly locate specific assets. The joint solution from Axle AI and Cloudian addresses this challenge head-on by combining Cloudian’s cloud-like, on-premises data lake with Axle AI’s AI-driven searchability of media assets and unified view irrespective of location.

“The power of AI is transforming the way media professionals interact with their content,” said Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI. “By integrating our AI-driven metadata tagging and search capabilities with Cloudian’s robust data lake, we are simplifying access and management of media files to a degree that was previously unimaginable.”

Complementing Axle AI’s capabilities, Cloudian’s hybrid data lake solution offers limitless on-premises media capacity that can be situated anywhere, plus cloud integration that facilitates policy-driven data management across both cloud and on-prem platforms. Cloudian’s full S3 API compatibility simplifies the process of migrating workflows between cloud and on-prem environments. This allows users to leverage existing S3 API-based media, tools, and applications while refining their infrastructure strategy to reduce costs.

“Our customers need S3 API-compatible solutions that address data sovereignty and security while also helping to control the costs of managing media growth,” said Michael Tso, CEO of Cloudian. “Our hybrid data lake allows media assets to be located anywhere, while remaining fully interoperable with existing S3-compatible tools. By collaborating with Axle AI, we now make those assets instantly searchable, both on-prem and in the cloud, with the power of AI.”

Key benefits of this integrated solution include:

  • Integrated AI capabilities: Axle AI’s MAM software generates searchable metadata based on advanced AI techniques including speech transcription, face recognition, and object/logo identification.
  • Workflow tools: Integrated review and approval workflows in the Axle AI browser front end, as well as a panel for Adobe’s Premiere Pro application, enable seamless post-production workflows.
  • Scalability: Designed to accommodate any size of operation, Axle AI’s solution scales seamlessly alongside Cloudian’s data lake, which boasts the capability to start small and expand limitlessly.
  • Security: With military-grade security, Cloudian ensures the protection of media assets from unauthorized access and ransomware threats.
  • Ease of Use: An intuitive interface across both Axle AI and Cloudian systems significantly reduces the learning curve, allowing all levels of staff to quickly adapt and enhance productivity.
  • Full Cloud Compatibility: Cloudian’s data lake supports full S3 API compatibility and hybrid cloud data management, enabling effortless data and workload transitions between cloud and on-prem frameworks.

Effortless Blurring Made Simple: Pro Techniques Unveiled

Logos and faces can pose a challenge during post-production when the need arises to blur them out. Blurring the image becomes necessary to avoid unintended promotion or potential legal implications, or when you need to protect someone’s identity.

While filming a reality show, where numerous critical production elements demand attention, logos frequently slip by unnoticed. Whether displayed on shirts or showcased on signs or banners, these logos tend to fly under the radar and come back to bite you.

Blurring logos is a widespread norm in television shows, used to safeguard privacy and adherence to legal obligations. Including a company logo in your final version without proper permissions can result in serious legal complications.”

Manually locating every frame where the inconvenient logo or face appears can be time-consuming and cost you significant hours of video editing or delay other creative tasks. Thankfully, Axle AI offers the perfect solution.

With Axle AI’s intuitive AI technology, locating logos and faces becomes a breeze. Simply select a few clips or images featuring the face in question to train the system, apply AI analysis with a simple click, and let the system effortlessly identify all other clips where that logo appears.

By eliminating the need for manually checking each clip one by one, you’ll be amazed at the savings in time and effort.

But that’s not all – this remarkable feature extends beyond faces and covers logos and objects as well. Continue reading to discover more!

Maintaining Compliance and Privacy

If you pay attention to reality shows, you’ll notice that numerous individuals in the background are intentionally blurred. This is usually because they haven’t provided consent or signed an image release.

With the Axle Faces feature, you can easily identify the points in the timeline where all unknown faces appear in a video.  This allows you to narrow down the key footage where faces have to be blurred.  In addition, if you have some examples of key people who have not signed releases and want to find them specifically, you can train Axle Faces about the individual faces you want to locate in the timeline, and it will display all the frames of the video where these faces appear.

Furthermore, Axle Objects offers the same features but this time with specific object recognition.

Efficient Content Discovery with Speech-to-Text Transcription

Additionally, Axle AI offers Speech-to-Text Transcription. This brilliant feature automatically generates precise transcriptions of spoken words in your videos. You can conveniently download these transcriptions in TXT format and export them as subtitles.

By searching for specific keywords or phrases, you can quickly locate sections within clips in seconds, eliminating the need for tedious manual searches through hours of footage to find the exact sound bite or memorable line you are looking for.

Whether you’re searching for a particular quote, conversation, or thematic element, the STT transcription feature acts as your digital dialogue companion. Experience the easiest way to search and edit your content with Axle AI.

Metadata Organization

Efficient content management relies heavily on metadata, and Axle AI‘s Media Asset Management (MAM) system excels in metadata organization.

Axle AI’s system empowers users to design customized metadata schemas using fields such as drop-down menus, radio buttons, check boxes, and tag clouds.

By adding context to each file, this feature improves the accessibility and management of content.

Why Diversity Benefits Editors: Unlocking Creative Potential

Click Here to Find an Adobe Premiere Pro Alternative
Diversity in Video Editing Programs

In the late 2010’s, before COVID, it felt like the pro video industry was rapidly consolidating around the use of Adobe Premiere Pro as the default editing software. This was the result of several market drivers – Apple consciously and abruptly switched from FCP 7 to FCPX more than a decade ago, losing many pro editors in the process; Avid seemingly narrowed its focus to large broadcasters and movie productions; and a number of other would-be challengers such as Media100, Edius and Sony Vegas almost fell by the wayside. So get ready for an Adobe world, right? Well, maybe….

Our MAM and workflow automation applications (Axle AI and Axle Connectr) not only work in an intuitive way with Premiere but also virtually every pro video editor because product diversity is good and gives you (the user) options. And we’ve been seeing a strong counter-trend away from an all-Adobe workflow as we talk to current and potential customers. Don’t get us wrong; nearly everyone has and uses Creative Cloud.  But they are branching out in their editing choices.

First of all, Blackmagic Design has made great strides with its DaVinci Resolve software, extending it from a high-end color correction system to a mainstream, fully-featured video editor. And most of its configurations are free! – Blackmagic makes a ton of money on its other hardware and software products – so they attract more customers to their product line-up by making Resolve free. That’s great marketing!

They’ve even recently introduced an iPad version, in addition to longstanding MacOS and Linux versions.

Meanwhile, Apple has done the right thing and continued to upgrade FCP(X) from its earliest versions, which had been missing a ton of key features for the pro market. Today, FCP is a really powerful, comprehensive toolset with a great UI. It doesn’t hurt that Apple’s new M1 and M2 processors have made Macs even more popular, and FCPX is optimized, even fine-tuned to work with them. The affordable one-time purchase price, as distinct from Adobe’s SaaS subscription pricing on Premiere Pro, is also an attraction.

Apple just came out with an iPad version of FCP as well… as you’d expect, performance is optimized for the M1 and M2 chipsets on the latest iPads.

Even Avid, which had been a bit of a sleeping giant for the past few years, has seen a modest revival with an updated UI, flexible pricing options, and interesting new remote workflow tools around their NEXIS|Pro networked storage. They are still strongest at the high end of the Pro marketplace, but at least there is a marketplace! If you’d asked us three years ago, things were headed for Adobe domination.

Finally, Lumatouch has made huge strides over the last few years with their powerful LumaFusion iPad/iPhone editing platform.  What started out being an interesting novelty has continued to gain power and features, and of course, the underlying Apple phone and tablet hardware is getting much more powerful every year. Lumatouch hasn’t left the Android world out of its approach, either, as there’s a version for Android and ChromeOS.  On the Apple side, the latest iPad Pros even include a Thunderbolt port for connecting hard drive and SSD storage, which starts to make this platform comparable to a MacBook Air or Pro for field workflows.  To give you an idea of the pro level of Lumatouch’s solutions, the latest release focuses on highly intuitive multicam workflows, with Lumatouch’s MultiCam Studio add-in.

With all these trends underway, Premiere Pro’s lock on the market was already lessening; but there’s been an even more interesting development in the last couple of years. Video editing software that works in your browser has become not only an interesting possibility but a real solution. Our own Axledit software provides amazing collaborative features with an elegant timeline editor, connectivity to both cloud and on-premise storage, supporting graphic overlays and integrated speech transcription and other AI features. You can collaborate on shared sequences and make your own versions of those sequences, then export any version directly to a desktop editor like Premiere, DaVinci, or Final Cut for finishing work. Other cloud vendors, such as RunwayML and Descript, have also launched in the last year, each bringing their own powerful AI capabilities to the browser-based editing concept.

In short, it’s a much more diverse video editing software world today – and diversity is a Good Thing.

Democratizing the Media Industry: A Revolution Unveiled

Click Here to Learn About Democratization of Media and the Impact of AI on the Media Industry
Democratizing the Media Industry

At Axle AI, we’re riding a massive wave: the emergence of video as a critical tool that plays a key role in the global economy. Over 500,000 teams worldwide already capture and edit video, a number that is expected to double to 1 million by the end of this decade. How did this happen, and why is it such a force to be reckoned with?

One or two decades ago, shooting and editing videos was largely the province of large media organizations – broadcasters and movie studios. Their distribution channels, likewise, were all geared for scale: terrestrial broadcasting, cable tv, and movie theatres. The only way to make money was to make content that appealed to large numbers of people at once, and the most successful content had massive production costs (think the Star Wars movies, or the Olympics).

But since then, whole new ways of targeted watching and distributing video have emerged – ranging from TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo to narrowly-focused FAST channels and dedicated apps at events. What this means is that there’s much more opportunity for specialized content to reach its potential audience. The Creator Economy is real, and whether those creators are individuals or increasingly, growing teams, they are able to deliver and monetize high quality content much faster than ever before.

For example, we can see that in key media industries like sports, media production is decentralizing from solely being done by broadcasters, to the leagues, teams and even individual players taking control of their own content, and rapidly finding the best ways to distribute it. And at each democratizing step, the number of media production teams goes up dramatically. Interestingly, the amount of footage per team doesn’t seem to be going down; rather, it’s increasing, as the number of ways to capture HD and 4K video (phones, DSLRs, drones, GoPros) lets even small teams capture diverse camera angles of the same event. Even the recent writers’ and actors’ union strikes in Hollywood are feeding into this trend, as they will only accelerate the shift to a much more diverse range of sources for watched media… at least in the short term!  Fewer big-name movies, more documentaries and YouTube clips.

The challenges of managing, searching, repurposing and archiving large amounts of high quality media are now seen everywhere. Fortunately, some key technologies have matured at just the right time. For instance, powerful transcoding software lets you make high-res proxy media for browser previewing of all your media, and amazing new AI/machine learning tools let you tag, transcribe and search huge amounts of that media in record time. A good thing too, because publishing video to social media platform calls for quick turnaround, NOW.

Examples of the kinds of searches that are now possible: you can look for all scenes where a particular person appears, or the combination of that person with certain words being spoken, or even (in the example of sports footage) all instances of someone saying “goal” where a given sponsor’s logo appears in the clip. The possibilities are endless; and before the availability of AI processing for media, only the largest media companies, with dedicated teams for metadata tagging and search, were able to do anything like this.

If you’re finding yourself shooting and editing large amounts of video, we hope you can contact us to learn more about our Axle AI MAM software, Axle Tags AI/ML engines, Axle Connectr workflow automation and Axledit browser-based collaboration platform. Together, they give your team a powerful toolset that will revolutionize your media productivity.

Can Media Asset Management Enhance Media Workflow Efficiency? [2023]

Media Asset Management (MAM)

Media Asset Management, or MAM, is pretty dry-sounding – but what it really makes possible is much faster, better reuse of the media you already have.

Whether it’s archived material from who-knows-when, B-roll shot who-knows-where, or recent work in progress that may just not have surfaced, chances are you have a lot of material that could be used to improve your edits and social media posts.

This article explores the concept of Media Asset Management (MAM) and its potential to enhance media workflow efficiency, revolutionizing the way we handle and leverage our valuable media resources.

Let’s start!

What is Media Asset Management?

Media Asset Management or MAM refers to a comprehensive system and process for organizing, storing, retrieving, and distributing media assets effectively.

It involves the use of specialized software and tools to manage various types of media files, including images, videos, audio, and documents.

MAM provides a centralized repository where assets can be easily located, tagged, and repurposed, streamlining the entire media workflow.

With Media Asset Management, organizations can transform their media chaos into a well-organized library, enabling faster content creation, better collaboration, and enhanced audience engagement

What’s the Difference between DAM & MAM?

While related, it’s important to differentiate between Digital Asset Management (DAM), and Media Asset Management (MAM).

A DAM encompasses digital assets like images, documents, and audio files. On the other hand, MAM encompasses DAM functionalities, providing a comprehensive solution for managing all types of media assets under one unified platform.

Now that you know this differences, you should learn about the key benefits of using a MAM, keep reading!

Benefits of using a Media Asset Management software

Many video teams we talk with have hundreds of terabytes or increasingly, petabytes of stored material.  The most common situations are that these are on piles of hard drives and SSDs, or consolidated on network storage.  Either way, the material is hard to find, leading to many hours lost shuffling through the material looking for a particular clip

If you can’t find it, you can’t use it!

A Media Asset Management solution brings a host of benefits to organizations seeking to optimize their media workflows. Here are some key advantages:

  1. Streamlined Organization: A Media Asset Management enables efficient organization and categorization of media assets, eliminating the time-consuming process of manually searching through folders or drives.
  2. Enhanced Collaboration: With a Media Asset Management, teams can collaborate seamlessly, sharing and accessing media assets in real-time, regardless of geographical location.
  3. Advanced Search and Metadata: A MAM powerful search capabilities and metadata tagging make it easy to locate specific media assets quickly, improving productivity and reducing wasted time.
  4. Workflow Automation: This solution automates repetitive tasks, such as transcoding and file conversions, freeing up valuable time for creative processes and content production.
  5. Scalability and Flexibility: As your media library grows, a MAM can scale accordingly, accommodating larger volumes of media assets while maintaining optimal performance.

Conclusions

In an era where media assets play a pivotal role in engaging audiences and driving business growth, Media Asset Management proves to be a game-changer for optimizing media workflow efficiency.

Axle solves the same problem by cataloging media where they already are – in your preferred, existing folder structures, with the file names and formats just how you like them.

Search & repurpose all your video with Axle AI. Finally, MAM that doesn’t suck!

Content producers now have a game-changing solution for managing their digital assets at lightning speed, thanks to the partnership between Axle AI, the leading AI-powered media asset management (MAM) tool provider, and OpenDrives, the pioneer in high-performance storage solutions. This collaboration brings together Axle AI’s media search and browser-based remote access capabilities with OpenDrives’ scalable, high-throughput storage platform, providing a complete and integrated solution for smarter media asset management. A solution brief covering the combination is now online at https://axleai.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Solution-Brief_AxleAI_OpenDrives.pdf and https://opendrives.com/resources/type/solution-briefs/. The companies are both exhibiting at the North Hall of this week’s NAB show, Axle AI at booth N1021 and OpenDrives at booth N1861.

Axle AI’s MAM software is renowned for its AI-driven capabilities that allow content producers to rapidly scan and enrich all media assets without imposing new workflows or file naming conventions. The Axle Tags AI/ML engines – automatic face recognition, object recognition, logo recognition and speech transcription – have made Axle AI the leading AI-powered MAM. With Axle AI’s browser interface, users can easily search, manage, and repurpose their media assets, and even launch collaborative edit sessions through the Axledit cloud application, all with complete remote access capabilities.

OpenDrives’ Atlas Core platform provides a high-performance storage backbone that complements Axle AI’s capabilities perfectly. Leveraging OpenDrives’ processing power, Axle AI runs its containerized server application modules directly on the OpenDrives platform, bringing the MAM application closer to the target data and accelerating critical media workflows. The containerized approach enables throughput that is nearly 100 times faster than traditional 10 Gigabit Ethernet-based solutions, making core functions of Axle AI such as file system scanning, metadata extraction, proxy generation, and AI/ML analysis significantly faster and more efficient.

“By integrating Axle AI’s media processing engines as containers on the OpenDrives platform, we have achieved unprecedented levels of performance and throughput,” said Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI. “This means that content producers can now search, manage, and repurpose their media assets in near-real time, making their creative workflows more efficient and productive than ever before.”

In addition to its performance benefits, OpenDrives’ Atlas Core platform is built on open standards and protocols, facilitating interoperability with other technologies. This enables seamless integration with popular video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Apple Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Avid Media Composer, as well as media archiving platforms like Archiware P5 and Spectra Logic’s Black Pearl, making Axle AI a perfect fit within the OpenDrives ecosystem.

The Axle AI and OpenDrives solution is designed to meet the needs of modern media and entertainment workflows, where efficient media asset management is crucial for productivity. With AI-driven tagging, remote access capabilities, and seamless integration with popular editing software and media archiving platforms, content producers can now unlock the full potential of their media assets and achieve a new level of efficiency and creativity.

How QNAP Storage Works So Well With Axle AI MAM

Industry-leading Storage and MAM companies team up at hundreds of customer sites with rapidly growing media requirements; QNAP and Axle AI exhibiting at NAB.

We and our hundreds of our customers have had great success with QNAP over the years – their systems are extremely reliable, and fast and scalable enough to handle demanding video workflows.”

— Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI

As digital media continues to dominate the world of content creation, the need for efficient and seamless media asset management has never been more necessary. With terabytes upon terabytes of video, images, and other media to keep track of, it’s no surprise that content creators often struggle with organization, storage, and collaboration. Fortunately, QNAP and Axle AI have teamed up to provide an integrated solution that simplifies the entire media asset management process.

QNAP (booth N2374) and Axle AI (booth N1021) are excited to announce that they will be showcasing their solutions at NAB in Las Vegas from April 15-19. Don’t miss the chance to visit our booths and learn more about how our integrated storage and media asset management solutions can revolutionize your content creation process.

QNAP storage and Axle AI MAM software

QNAP’s high-speed, network-attached storage (NAS) solutions with the addition of expansion units, are capable of storing petabytes of data, making it easily accessible to multiple users, simultaneously. Thunderbolt and various high-speed Ethernet options enable teams of editors to simultaneously access and edit files directly from the NAS, without the need for time-consuming file transfers. Additionally, if a drive fails, QNAP is hot-swappable with RAID redundancy, allowing users to switch out affected drives without losing data and interrupting their workflow. Sam Bogoch, Axle AI’s CEO, said “We and our customers have had great success with QNAP over the years – their systems are extremely reliable, and fast and scalable enough to handle demanding video workflows.”

NAB Show 2023, Las Vegas

What really sets QNAP apart is its integration with Axle AI’s intelligent asset management software. This integration enables more intuitive media organization, allowing users to search for files not only by title or category but also by an extensive range of other metadata, such as AI/ML-powered facial recognition and automatic voice transcription. Finding the exact moment when a specific person said a specific phrase or word is as simple as entering a search query.

QNAP’s NAS also allows users to create multi-tier storage arrays, allowing them to set up a hybrid hard drive/solid-state solution and store hi-access media such as proxy files on SSDs for superior performance while keeping the larger, hi-res files on higher-capacity hard drive arrays. This means that users can easily work with lightweight proxy files while the NAS stores the original, high-resolution files in a secure, accessible location. When browsing video clips, users can scrub through the clip right on the file thumbnail to quickly glance at the scenes within the clip. This feature speeds up the review process and helps users identify the content they need quickly and easily.

Axle AI also includes powerful collaboration tools. Team members can access and edit media files directly from the platform, making it easy to produce content and maintain consistency across the creative project. With Axle AI, you can share project files, annotations, and comments, all from within the platform. This streamlines the collaboration process and makes it easy to keep everyone on the same page, reducing the risk of errors or miscommunications. In addition, Axle offers a no-code workflow automation tool, Connectr, that streamlines a wide range of video processing tasks. Overall, Axle’s MAM is a powerful toolset that can help media professionals create high-quality content in less time.

Another benefit of using Axle AI is its ability to provide secure, remote access to all media and files. Editors and producers can access their media from anywhere with an internet connection, as long as they have the proper permissions and credentials. By providing web-based remote access, Axle AI makes it easier for teams to work together, no matter where they are. This can be a big enabler for remote or distributed teams, or for teams that need to work on media projects while on the go.

Whether for small teams with just a few terabytes of data, or a large teams with petabytes, QNAP has the right solution to store content and keep the production process fluid. With QNAP and Axle AI, media asset management has never been simpler.

Axle AI introduces Smarter Petabyte Plus: AI MAM bundle with Seagate’s Exos CORVAULT Storage System for $94,995

Axle AI and Seagate extend Smarter Media collaboration to networked on-premise storage for video, with revolutionary AI search, capacity and pricing.

Axle AI, Inc is announcing the immediate availability of its turnkey storage solution with Seagate Technology’s (NASDAQ: STX), powerful Exos® CORVAULT™ high performance, self-healing multi-petabyte storage system and Axle AI 2023 MAM, Axle Tags, and Axle Connectr workflow automation software. The combined solution includes a massive 1.7 petabytes of networked on-premise storage, plus the ability to catalog and search content based on AI-driven transcription, facial recognition, object, and logo recognition capabilities.

According to Sam Bogoch, founder and CEO of Axle AI, “Without Axle AI, it can be very time-consuming for content teams to annotate and tag their media, but with our Smarter Petabyte Plus solution, customers can index content on their Seagate Exos CORVAULT storage system automatically. In addition, the solution automatically creates low-resolution proxy media and provides a browser interface so that today’s distributed teams can access their media remotely.” The company will be exhibiting at the NAB Conference in April, booth N1021.

Smart Petabyte Plus represents a value/performance breakthrough in an industry where petabyte-scale solutions have typically cost hundreds of thousands of dollars without a fully functional MAM solution. A petabyte building block – 1,000 terabytes of storage space – is increasingly needed as today’s video production skyrockets, resolutions increase, more versions of content are produced, and more users need access to content.

The Smarter Petabyte Plus solution includes a 2U application server running a 5-user version of Axle AI 2023, the company’s ‘radically simple’ video search software. The software, which is upgradable to support hundreds of users, features a browser front end that enables multiple users to tag, catalog, and search their media files and a range of AI-driven options to automatically catalog and discover specific visual and audio attributes within those files, which are displayed as searchable metadata within Axle’s radically simple user interface. Given the large amounts of video, often multiple terabytes, accumulated in video production today, this new solution saves significant time and effort by allowing rapid search and management of those media files.

The system incorporates Seagate’s Exos CORVAULT storage system , which offers “five-nines” availability (99.999%), delivering consistently high reliability. The maximum-density 4U chassis accommodates 106 drives in only seven inches (18 cm) of rack space. It is tuned to maximize drive performance by protecting against vibrational and acoustic interference, heat, and power irregularities. Additionally, Seagate’s new VelosCT chip powers the system’s dual storage controllers, which optimizes all drive actuators in parallel, driving superior performance. At the same time, Seagate’s Advanced Distributed Autonomic Protection Technology (ADAPT) distributes data across every drive offering advanced data protection and fast rebuilds without sacrificing performance. CORVAULT also offers Autonomous Drive Regeneration (ADR) technology, which is a self-healing system that renews drives in-situ without requiring a manual drive swap. Developed by Seagate, ADR can return many drives to dependable service by reconfiguring the drive to bypass errant components. The technology also helps reduce the environmental impact of computer e-waste as ADR drives are renewed instead of discarded.

Finally, the solution includes Axle AI’s Connectr 2023 workflow automation tool, which allows a wide range of powerful workflows to be implemented. These can include copying high-res, low-res proxy media, or both to Seagate Lyve™ Cloud that can easily be set up for collaboration, archiving, or disaster recovery connected to the Smarter Petabyte Plus solution. In this way, on-premise networked and complementary cloud storage can be provided by a single industry-leading vendor – Seagate.

Pricing and Availability

The Smarter Petabyte Plus bundle is available immediately from Axle AI and its global resellers, at a price of $94,995. This includes 1.7 petabytes of enterprise disk-based storage, 40 Gigabit/sec, 10 Gigabit/sec and 1 Gigabit/second network interfaces, and ZFS filesystem access, as well as the Axle AI 2023, Axle Tags and Axle Connectr 2023 applications. Axle AI 2023 launch webinar: customer testimonial and in-depth demos

Uncovering Media Management and AI Trends: A Review of Axle AI’s Webinar with Carpe Canum Media

The requirements of Media Asset Management have become increasingly complex in recent years, with the proliferation of digital content and the need to store, organize, and search through vast amounts of data. To help video teams and businesses navigate these challenges, Axle AI recently hosted a webinar featuring customer Scott Salik of Carpe Canum Media, Inc, plus Sam Bogoch, Patrice Gouttebel, and Rachel Fearon of Axle AI. The session covered the latest trends in media management, AI, and the video industry, followed by a demo of key product features and a Q&A session.

The webinar began with an overview of the current state of the media industry and the challenges faced by businesses in managing their content. The speakers discussed the importance of having a comprehensive media management strategy in place, which includes not only media and data storage but also the ability to search through vast amounts of metadata quickly and efficiently. The importance of AI in automating tasks and improving workflow efficiency was a central theme.

Axle customer Scott Salik talked about how Carpe Canum Media, Inc. use Axle ai’s MAM: “What Axle allows us to do is using all their different technologies, by tagging things, by using the AI transcription. It allows us to quickly search for footage and then get that tagged and marked in a bin in Axle AI. Then to be able to get it to an editor, get the swats, the spots swapped and get it to the TV side to get it on the air. “

He also commented on giving clients access to Axel so they can tag the footage directly. That allows them to know better and faster what the client is looking for, what they like, what shots they like, what they call specific things, they’ll tag faces, etc.  “We’ll be connecting all the media access that makes it really simple. We have people over the world that access Axle and allows us to act to move really really fast. (…) I’ll sound like an old person now but I’ve been in the business for 40 years and what Axle allows me to do is to work less and work quicker and I think that’s one of the great things about it.”

One of the key takeaways from the webinar was the importance of having a flexible media management system that can adapt to changing business needs. Axle AI‘s platform was showcased as a tool that can help businesses achieve this flexibility, with its ability to integrate with existing workflows and easily scale up or down as needed.

The webinar also included a demo of key product features, including Axle AI’s advanced search capabilities and its ability to integrate with other tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro with the extensions for the Adobe Creative Cloud applications. The Q&A session provided an opportunity for attendees to ask questions about the platform and its features, with the speakers providing valuable insights and advice based on their extensive experience in the industry.

Overall, the webinar was an excellent overview of the latest trends in media management and AI, and the ways in which businesses can leverage technology to improve their operations and gain a competitive edge. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about these topics.

Collaborative Video Editing with Axledit: Seamlessly Harness Seagate Lyve Cloud

If you’ve got many terabytes of video storage, chances are a large portion of it is just sitting there, on hard drives, not being used. Why just stash content away when you can repurpose and breathe new life into it, maybe even get paid for it?

Axle ai, has collaborated with Seagate Technology, a world leader in mass-data storage infrastructure solutions, to integrate the company’s Axledit Tera with Seagate Lyve™ Cloud to create a complete cloud solution for managing and editing multiple terabytes or petabytes of video content, directly from your browser. Your media is secure on Seagate Lyve Cloud; Axledit makes it easy to find and edit that material in your browser.

The Axledit Tera solution is being featured in a Seagate-Axle ai-Archiware webinar on June 30th. The webinar will highlight a range of compelling ways you can benefit from Seagate Lyve Cloud in media and entertainment workflows.

The Axledit Tera collaboration is centered around Seagate Lyve Cloud, Seagate’s always-on mass capacity object storage cloud platform, designed to enable multi-cloud freedom without egress fees or other add-on charges. Axle ai’s Axledit is a browser-based collaborative editor that makes it easy for media teams to remotely search and manage their content from anywhere. Together, Axle ai and Seagate are broadening access to cost-effective smart media cloud solutions for the professional video community.

Axledit Tera uniquely allows editing and even rendering directly from archived material. Unlike existing cloud services which only allow HD and 4K media to be retrieved from archive in a cumbersome, slow process, Axledit Tera uses the high-bandwidth storage of Seagate Lyve Cloud for instant ongoing access at any time. In addition, Seagate Lyve Cloud doesn’t charge any egress fees, allowing unlimited, realtime access to HD and 4K footage as well as high resolution images and audio files saved on Axledit Tera.

Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle ai, said “For years, creative teams have expressed the need for a simplified and cost-efficient way to store, search and edit their content. Legacy solutions for broadcasters have been expensive and complex, but the powerful Axle ai-Seagate solution brings revolutionary browser-based editing to the widest possible range of creative teams.”

Explore the Enhanced Collaborative Video Editing Experience with Axledit 1.1

We’ve gone live with a much-improved version 1.1 of our revolutionary Axledit collaborative cloud video editing platform. The upgraded features will help video teams meet the demands of the worldwide explosion of video content.

According to a report by market intelligence firm IDC, the sum of data generated globally is set to accelerate exponentially to nearly 180 zettabytes by 2025 (one zettabyte is equal to 1 billion terabytes). A growing, double-digit percentage of this data consists of media files. Which means billions of terabytes of video that needs to be stored, searched, and repurposed.

Video teams need to work more efficiently

Over 500,000 video teams worldwide are responsible for editing, managing and publishing content with escalating pressure to produce more video faster, under tighter budgets. We created Axledit 1.1 to help video teams meet these challenges.

Axledit is a revolutionary cloud editing platform, it runs entirely in your browser and enables real-time collaboration between team members, clients and assistants. This is a big difference from traditional video editing software, as it works much like document editing tools such as Google Docs that can be accessed from any device.

The system also features one-click publishing of high-res rendered videos to YouTube and Vimeo, without requiring a cumbersome download and upload of media files.

Here’s an overview of the new features in Axledit 1.1:

  • You can now upload entire folders, not just individual files, via drag and drop.
  • It’s much faster to preview and share, as video and audio are now available via Review Links, even before they’re fully ready for editing.
  • More compact list view, so you can see more items on the same size window
  • New selection box for the file list
  • Password protection for review links
  • Option to download H.264 proxy media instead of high res when downloading
  • Project archiving to Axledit Tera, a new affordable cloud storage option based on Seagate’s Lyve Cloud.
  • Optional on-premise gateway allows you to search and pull from large existing media repositories on network attached storage (NAS) devices.

These improved features are helping teams work seamlessly together, even if they’re on opposite sides of the planet, enhancing productivity and providing huge cost savings by dramatically reducing time spent on postproduction and clunky review/approval cycles.

Now includes affordable, scalable storage

Axledit 1.1includes integration with our Tera nearline archiving based on Seagate Lyve Cloud, which allows the unique capability of editing and even rendering directly from archived material in the cloud. Unlike existing cloud services which only allow media to be retrieved from archive in a cumbersome, slow process, Axledit 1.1’s Tera feature offers immediate access with no egress fees allowing unlimited, real-time access to HD and 4K footage as well as high resolution images and audio files saved on Axledit Tera.

Axledit 1.1 is available at a starting price of $10 per user per month plus $12 per terabyte per month. A higher user tier offers additional integrations and capabilities, at $50 per user per month plus $12 per terabyte per month. Both pricing tiers include all axledit collaborative features including multi-editor timeline editing, version locking, review and approval from mobile devices. Additional capabilities, such as cataloging large on-premise media storage with the aid of machine learning (Axle AI 2022) or automating repetitive workflow tasks and integrating third-party REST APIs (axle connectr) are available at additional cost.

How Axle AI & XenData make media management & search easier

Axle AI and XenData have joined forces at NAB 2022 to combine AI powered media search and collaborative editing with highly scalable data storage solutions. By launching support within Axle AI 2022 for XenData’s X100 active archive, the companies’ are making it easier to manage and search large amounts of video.

The resulting combination of Axle Ai’s browser-based search, along with media management, AI tagging and Axledit’s editing platform with XenData’s robust back end storage facilities is ideal for creative video, medical imaging, video surveillance and other applications with high volumes of large files.

Axle ai’s media management software is deployed at over 800 customers worldwide, including leading media companies such as ParamountWarner Bros, and NBC Universal. The X100 is powered by XenData Archive Series software which is trusted by over 1,500 organizations in over 90 countries, including many of the world’s largest media companies.

Dramatic industry consolidation over the last 18 months – with companies such as Masstech, Levels Beyond, CatDV, Primestream and DIVA being acquired – has left Axle AI and XenData in strong positions to provide high-capacity media storage applications to more companies in need of affordable solutions.

In addition to market changes, technology is having a rapid impact on the space. Traditionally, large media repositories have needed extensive manual tagging to make video, audio and image content searchable. Axle AI 2022 employs powerful machine learning to create rich metadata for media files, automatically. These include axle Speech (speech transcription for $1 per hour of footage), axle Tags (face recognition, object recognition and logo recognition), and axle OCR functionality to extract text from images and PDFs. This opens major new market segments to the Axle AI/XenData combination, ones which would have previously required prohibitive amounts of labor to make the video searchable.

Axle ai 2022 supports server configurations with Linux and MacOS as well as Windows (via VMware). Apple’s latest Mac Studio hardware, with 10 or 20 powerful CPU cores in a compact desktop package, is an ideal low-cost engine for deployments of Axle AI 2022. The media management solution accesses the Xendata X100 via 10 Gigabit Ethernet and XenData’s XML API, for a seamless user experience across the two products.

The streamlined, Axle AI 2022 user interface is accessed via the browsers of multiple users, who can search, manage and collaborate around huge media repositories without needing to know any technical details of how the back end is managed. In addition, the new axledit collaborative editing tool and Axle ai’s Premiere panel allow media to be dragged directly into the timeline of both cloud-based editing and traditional on-premise editing for Mac or Windows.

The X100 archive strongly adheres to standards. It supports writing to LTO cartridges using LTFS and writes to ODA cartridges using the Sony interchange standard. It fully supports the Microsoft security model based on Active Directory, making it easy to install in an existing Windows domain; likewise, Axle AI 2022 also supports Active Directory for user authentication.

Multiple X100 systems may be synchronized using XenData’s Multi-Site Sync service which links multiple archives in different locations, creating a single global file system accessible from anywhere. As soon as a file is archived to LTO or ODA at one location, it becomes available as a stub file within the global file system. When a user makes a change by writing, overwriting or deleting a file, that change is propagated to all locations. This provides a consistent up-to-date set of files across the entire distributed organization.

Sam Bogoch, Axle AI CEO, commented, “The design of the X100 is based on everything that we have learned from the 1500+ XenData archives that have been installed worldwide. It uses a simple architecture which takes advantage of the power of today’s multi-processor servers.”

If you’re going to be in Las Vegas for NAB 2022, stop by and say hello. Axle AI will be in booth N4816 and XenData booth N1516.

NoCode Automating Workflow Software for Windows, Mac & Linux

New Windows version of #NoCode workflow tool significantly broadens market

Today at Adobe MAX, axle ai, the leader in bringing radical simplicity to video search and collaboration, announced availability of Connectr 2021, its revolutionary NoCode software for automating media workflows, for Windows, MacOS and Linux.

The software is available for all 3 platforms and is shipping immediately. Pricing starts at $3,895 for a MacOS version supporting up to 4 concurrent workflows, with one day of professional services for workflow design included. In addition to the all-new Windows support, the new version of Connectr adds greater capability and simplified operation, such as multi-button selection menus and progress bars.

Dave Seedall, VP of Technology of Revolt TV was able to replace a complex media management and workflow solution from a European vendor originally costing more than $200,000, with a simple, affordable axle cpoonnectr 2021 solution costing less than $10,000. During the transition the COVID-19 pandemic forced a significant shift to offsite, virtual operations for Revolt. That shift was facilitated by the automated workflows powered by Connectr, as well as axle ai’s browser-based media management application.

“We’ve been really impressed with how robust and flexible Connectr is, and are already looking forward to taking further advantage of its open systems benefits and almost limitless connectivity,” Seedall added. Other prominent examples of Connectr users include Spanish telecom integrator Telefonica and leading Italian broadcaster MediaSet.

The NoCode Trend Comes To The Video Industry

“We want to give users the ability to set up their own powerful media workflows, on all the major computing platforms” said Sam Bogoch, axle ai’s CEO. “Our industry has lacked a truly open, cross-platform workflow tool priced affordably enough to achieve broad adoption.” Until now, media producers have had to either hire programmers to write custom code, buy more expensive and proprietary solutions tied to a specific application such as Telestream’s Vantage (transcoding) or IBM’s Aspera Orchestrator (file transfer), or, very often, do without. “With Connectr 2021, axle ai is putting a powerful workflow solution into the market at an affordable price, and opening it up to resellers and integrators as well as end users. It’s also offered to OEM partners who may license and relabel under their own brands,” Bogoch said.

The video industry has hundreds of highly capable specialist vendors and a handful of larger companies with broad product lines. Typically, integrating an automated workflow involving two or more of these vendors is beyond reach for most customers, blocking access to greater efficiencies across the entire media creation process. Connectr 2021 is intended to break this deadlock, allowing multi-way connectivity and integration to propagate over time, well beyond the footprint of single-vendor solutions.

Visual Front End

The Connectr 2021 software includes a graphical front end, Connectr Designer, which makes constructing workflows a simple drag-and-drop process. Software and hardware vendors, integrators and other technically proficient customers are able to create their own modules to plug into Connectr 2021, becoming part of a large and rapidly growing workflow ecosystem. Modules can either be shared for free on open source code repositories, or compiled and sold commercially by vendors. This cross-vendor ecosystem supports a wide range of interfaces, from REST APIs to Java code and command lines. It also supports notifications via either email or SMS messaging.

Connectr 2021 works seamlessly with axleai.com 2021, the company’s flagship remote work solution for video teams. Integrations for the combined platform include panels for Adobe® Premiere® Pro, After Effects®, Photoshop®, Illustrator® and InDesign®, where assets can be searched, selected and imported into each of the host Creative Cloud® applications on Mac or Windows.

“More than ever before, creative teams are collaborating from remote locations and need powerful media workflows,” said Sue Skidmore, head of partner relations for Adobe video. “Creative Cloud users appreciate seamless solutions such as those from axleai.com that make it easy to tap into assets, regardless of location.”

Axle AI Announces Acquisition of Noscos, Face Recognition Technology Startup

Companies will join forces to provide integrated media management, workflow and AI/ML solutions

Boston-based Axle AI, the software company enabling remote work for video teams, announced that it has acquired Noscos, a developer of AI/ML solutions for video and images based in Riga, Latvia. Backed by Overkill Ventures, Noscos has developed groundbreaking face recognition and logo recognition software tools, as well as intuitive user interfaces for training these tools on large datasets. While Axle AI had previously developed its own in-house face recognition libraries and also worked with Microsoft’s Video Indexer technology, they chose to first partner with Noscos and then acquire the company, its developers and IP based on the clear advantages of Noscos’s solution. Noscos’s cofounder Arturs Sprogis, PhD is joining Axle as Senior R&D manager, heading up a merged team of developers based primarily in Latvia.

There is a worldwide explosion of video content. The market intelligence firm IDC has estimated that the sum of data generated globally by 2025 is set to accelerate exponentially to 175 zettabytes. A growing, double-digit percentage of this storage is used to house media files. Meanwhile, approximately 400,000 video teams worldwide are responsible for capturing, editing, and managing this content, but much of it becomes difficult to leverage soon after capture; in a report commissioned by Axle AI’s partner, storage company Seagate, IDC estimates that more than two-thirds of this data is not readily searchable or available for access after initial use.

Axle AI has integrated Noscos’s powerful technology with its Axle AI 2021 media management and Connectr 2021 workflow automation tools, so that video creation teams can easily make hundreds of terabytes or even petabytes of their footage searchable without high costs or complex training. A further benefit of the Axle AI solutions is that they make remote access to high-res media workflows, via web browsers, practical for the first time. This represents a major step forward for many media teams who are having to adapt to an unprecedented amount of remote work in 2020 and 2021.

NOSCOS’s technologies, to be rebranded as Axle Faces, face recognition, (available now) and Axle Logos (available later this year) have several clear advantages over AI/ML toolsets from large-scale cloud providers like Microsoft, Google and Amazon. These are:

  1. The option to run on local hardware controlled by the customer, or in the cloud, or in a hybrid solution.
  2. Fixed monthly cost, leading to much lower solution cost when compared to cloud providers which typically bill per hour of footage processed.
  3. Fewer security concerns, as sensitive footage does not need to be sent to a cloud provider over the public internet.
  4. Simple, intuitive browser user interface for training and evolving the AI/ML model to cover additional faces, or to improve performance with an existing set of faces over time.

Given the vast amounts of video – often many terabytes – that can be accumulated by a video team in even a single shoot, this system allows rapid search and management of those files over time. Axle AI’s software also includes a range of plug-in panels for Adobe’s Creative Cloud application suite software, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe AfterEffects, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign. These panels allow creative team members on any Mac or Windows laptop to directly search, access, and download media files wherever they are located.

Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI, said “Adding Noscos to the Axle AI team gives us an even stronger machine-learning capability behind the transformative solutions that we’re delivering to the video industry.” A Republic-sponsored panel webinar on investment in the creator tools space at 2PM ET today, Thursday 9/9, will feature Bogoch along with with founders of two other media-related investments on the Republic.co platform, Curastory and Nedl. Signup for the event is at https://lu.ma/republic-tools.

How Pie Town Productions Uses Axle AI MAM For Remote Post-Production

Remote ‘smarter media’ workflows allow 60-person post production team to work effectively throughout COVID transition; Axle AI software replaced legacy MAM.

Ever since the pandemic started, many of us have been working from home. At Pie Town Productions, a 25-year-old TV production company based in North Hollywood, they’ve been working from “home” for over two decades. That’s because they produce many of the well-known house renovation/flipping programs on HGTV, including House Hunters, Flip or Flop, Flipping 101 with Tarek El Moussa, and Christina on the Coast. The company is one of Greater LA’s most successful and prosperous reality shops.

Yet even Pie Town had to adjust when COVID-19 obligated everyone to “shelter in place,” forcing the vast majority of its staff to work remotely. Fortunately, they had implemented Axle AI software to manage all their media, which comprises 100 terabytes of online/work-in-progress clips stored on Avid NEXIS Pro shared storage, and another 200 terabytes of near-line data on a NAS (network attached storage) system. Axle’s web-based user interface is engineered to be accessible from anywhere on any device. Further, Axle enables them to select clips from low-resolution proxy media, with final rendering occurring back on the servers, to avoid having to transfer huge files back and forth during postproduction sessions.

“With Axle in place, we can now all look at the same clip, at the same time,” explains Dana Besnoy, Pie Town’s SVP of Post Production. “Axle has connected us in a way we didn’t realize was possible when we all started scampering out of the building at the start of the pandemic.”

Pie Town has a very busy schedule, shooting three to five full episodes of House Hunters per week in addition to its local productions. In all, they produce about 200-300 episodes of reality and lifestyle programming per year. The raw footage is copied to the NAS at the end of each shoot, and Axle AI automatically generates a low-res proxy, which is then available to the entire team. In all, between 40 and 60 Pie Town employees access Axle AI on a daily basis.

“This allows all of our departments to access and review media with their needs in mind. Production can review for camera/audio concerns and/or crew feedback. Story can get a head start on their string out. And Post can access clips needed for transcription,” notes Besnoy. “Axle has been a great tool for tying us all together.”

Like many post houses, Pie Town’s post production workflow uses Avid Media Composer 2018 as their nonlinear editor, with the editors working in a fully Mac environment, and must accommodate a wide variety of original camera formats. “We’re able to accept almost any format that comes from the field; we accept any Sony camera, any Canon camera. Most of our internal equipment is ENG-style workhorse and digital cinema.

Not surprisingly, Pie Town has been leveraging media asset management (MAM) technology for some time now. They were pioneers with Apple Final Cut Server and, when that product’s development was terminated, they transitioned to another MAM for nearly a decade. However, notes Besnoy, that approach hit a roadblock, because the high operating costs and user complexity were a bad match for their needs, and maintaining it was getting more difficult over time. “We made the easy decision to switch to Axle; we have millions and millions of digital assets that we need to maintain as an ongoing, growing, organic digital library, and transitioning to Axle just made sense,” she explains. “It’s user-friendly; straight out of the box, it works; setup was seamless and transitioning and transferring our assets from our old MAM to Axle took under a week.”

“Axle has been a great MAM solution for us; we’ve been using it for about a year now, and our user base tends not to be highly technical, so the UI of Axle is perfect for them,” she observes. “I’ve gotten many compliments from our users that its ease of use is superior to our previous MAM.”

Video Innovator Axle AI Seeking Capital via Equity Crowdfunding to Expand Operations & Offerings

Investing in this revolutionary video company might be a “right place, right time” investment.

Axle AI stands out in the equity crowdfunding arena for several reasons; chief among them is that this is a company generating strong revenue. Their client list is impressive, consisting of notable organizations including NBC Universal, Warner Bros, the NY Yankees, and In N’Out Burger among hundreds of other paying customers.

Tech industry titan Seagate noticed, which led to a groundbreaking collaboration now underway.

What garners all this interest and energy? There are about 400,000 teams worldwide who shoot and edit video, a number expected to grow to 600,000 by 2024. Almost every company, brand and venue is ramping up video creation to reach their audience. Yet the tools to pull together the right content for editing are often as basic as loose hard drives, Post-It notes and the odd spreadsheet.

With a major push from 2020’s COVID experience running clear through to present day, video is on its way to becoming the primary medium of communication for the world’s 7+ billion inhabitants. Meanwhile, machine learning can now transcribe video quickly as well as analyze, in depth, nearly any type of video content.

Axle AI has grabbed an early lead in enabling small, agile teams who shoot all this video to search and manage their material, by leveraging the power of artificial intelligence and an easy-to-use browser front end.

Industry heavyweight Jason Calacanis has invested $100k through his LAUNCH! accelerator, and recently Stadia Ventures, North America’s leading sports tech accelerator, also invested $100k.

Other investors include Quake Capital ($150k) as well as strong list of industry-savvy angel investors including media guru Randi Zuckerberg, Google’s Tejpaul Bhatia, Silicon Valley NAS pioneer Larry Boucher, and media tech analyst Mike Vorhaus.

Overall investor enthusiasm is clear; Axle AI’s 2020 Republic Reg. CF equity crowdfunding campaign was oversubscribed, and this year’s raise has already exceeded the 2020 total.

Adobe obviously sees the emerging, growing value in the video space as well through their planned acquisition of Frame.io in a $1.3 billion all-cash deal announced today (source: Bloomberg) . axleai.com’s CEO Sam Bogoch, a tech veteran and recognized media software expert, sees nothing but energy and excitement ahead in the video space and his company’s unique role in that space.

Investors interested in getting in on this round are invited to inspect the offering.

Watermarks protect your media in Axle AI

This month, we’re highlighting some of our team’s favorite features — some you may know about, and some you may not! These are different aspects of Axle AI ai with one thing in common: they all make it easier for you and your team to work with video, audio and graphics, whether you’re in the office or working remotely.
This week, let’s talk about adding another layer of protection to media…

Axle AI makes it radically simple… to create watermarks

Axle has a variety of tools to help users protect their media, including the option to add a watermark to proxy files. A watermark can be created out of any image with a transparent background. Watermarks are most easily added to proxies when they are first being created from the original media. Existing proxies can be re-made to include a watermark, but the best time to talk with us about including a watermark is before your initial installation.

Automate workflows directly from your Axle library

At Axle AI we’re known for our AI-powered video search and remote access software, but we have another great tool in our belt. Connectr is a workflow automation application that is totally separate from Axle. It requires almost no coding and can integrate with just about any third-party application to automate routine repetitive tasks that chew up time but don’t generate revenue.

Radically simple integration between Axle AI and Connectr

Connectr workflows can start in a number of ways; they can be triggered manually, scheduled, and also controlled from within the Axle AI interface. Administrators can link their Axle AI and Connectr systems via the Admin Pages and enable permissions to let users run Connectr workflows from Axle AI. Once enabled, users can start workflows from the Action Menu. By selecting “Send to Connectr” in the dropdown menu, users can trigger any active workflows in the connected project for chosen files or folders.

Customize your proxy settings in Axle AI

This summer, we’re highlighting some of our team’s favorite features — some you may know about, and some you may not! These are different aspects of Axle AI with one thing in common: they all make it easier for you and your team to work with video, audio and graphics, whether you’re in the office or working remotely.

This week, let’s cover a key component in Axle…

easier

Axle AI makes it radically simple… to work with proxy files

An important piece of Axle AI is our use of low-resolution proxy files. Axle creates h.264 proxies of all your original media, making it fast and easier to view media from any web browser. There are several default proxy settings, such as location and resolution, that can be customized for your system. By default, the size of a proxy file is about five to ten percent of the original file size, and any system can be set to process higher-resolution proxies. It’s important to take this into account when planning your designated proxy storage for your Axle library. Adding a watermark to your proxies is an available feature for your Axle library that is typically done when the system is first installed.

Seagate and Axle AI Announce Smarter Media Solutions

Video capture is growing crazy-fast, and while storage leaders like Seagate offer robust technologies for storing media, they realize their creative customers often lack the tools to easily tag and search that media. That’s why we’re excited to announce our product collaboration with Seagate, which can make your media smart, accessible, and way more organized.

Seagate & Axle AI Announce “Smarter Media” Collaboration

Solutions cover full Product range from Seagate’s Lyve Mobile, Lyve Cloud storage-as-a-service platform, and direct attached storage

Why just stash content away when you can repurpose and breathe new life into it while improving productivity and ROI with powerful search tools? Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ: STX), a world leader in data storage infrastructure solutions, and Axle AI, the leading independent vendor of media search software, have joined forces to provide complete solutions not only to store, but also manage and provide instant user access to many terabytes or petabytes of video content. Your media is safer on Seagate storage; Axle AI’s software makes it easily findable as well.

The new collaboration is centered around the Seagate® Lyve™ edge-to-cloud mass storage platform, designed to offer a coherent data storage architecture extending from on-premise removable media through industry-leading cloud storage-as-a-service (STaaS), all from a single trusted vendor. Axle AI’s software is a browser-based front end that can be used across multiple storage devices and services, making it easy for media teams to remotely search and manage their content from anywhere. Together, Axle AI and Seagate are broadening access to cost effective smart media solutions for real world applications.

There is a worldwide explosion of video content. The market intelligence firm IDC has estimated that the sum of data generated globally by 2025 is set to accelerate exponentially to 175 zettabytes. A growing, double-digit percentage of this storage is used to house media files. Meanwhile, approximately 400,000 video teams worldwide are responsible for capturing, editing, and managing this content, but much of it becomes difficult to leverage soon after capture; in a report commissioned by Seagate, IDC estimates that more than two-thirds of data stored is not readily searchable or available for access after initial use.

Video files have become large and numerous, while ongoing capture is so pervasive that most content storage requires a hybrid cloud strategy. Ideally, the most immediate media is captured on solid-state drive (SSD) and hard disk drive (HDD)-based storage solutions and then transferred to a cloud infrastructure allowing remote access and global search. This is ideally suited to Seagate’s new Lyve offerings, which span a wide range of media use cases with powerful and affordable capabilities.

Seagate and Axle AI have entered into a broad-ranging solutions agreement where a full range of Seagate products and services will now be offered by Axle AI in conjunction with their own media indexing, tagging, and search software. These joint solutions include:

  1. Seagate direct attached SSD, HDD, and RAID solutions
  2. Seagate’s Lyve Mobile solutions
  3. Seagate’s Lyve Cloud STaaS

Each configuration includes an instance of Axle AI 2021, the company’s browser-based remote media search software. The software includes a browser front end allowing multiple users to tag, catalog and search their media files, as well as a range of AI-driven options for automatically cataloging and discovering specific visual and audio attributes within those files.  For instance, audio tracks can be automatically transcribed, with the resulting transcript immediately searchable in the timeline; likewise, Axle AI provides face recognition with integrated training for new faces over time. The modular nature of the system supports additional plug-ins for object and logo recognition, and identification of sports highlights. The software can be used to create distributed team workflows for storage pools that would otherwise be siloed and hard to search.

Given the vast amounts of video – often many terabytes – that can be accumulated by a video team in even a single shoot, this system allows rapid search and management of those files. The software also includes a range of plug-in panels for Adobe’s Creative Cloud application suite software, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe AfterEffects, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign. These panels allow creative team members on any Mac or Windows laptop to directly search, access, and download media files wherever they are located.

Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI, said “For years, creative teams have expressed the need for a simplified and cost-efficient way to store, search and manage their content. Legacy solutions for broadcasters have been expensive and complex, but these powerful Seagate-Axle AI bundles manage to bring state-of-the-art AI and MAM (media asset management) capabilities to the widest possible range of creative teams. They work at nearly any scale, from terabytes of storage on set, to petabytes of storage in the cloud.”

“Seagate’s latest mass capacity storage solutions simplify how data is securely captured, aggregated, transported, and managed,” said Jeff Fochtman, senior vice president of marketing at Seagate Technology. “Together, Axle AI and Seagate deliver even greater value by offering a set of scalable solutions that help media and entertainment professionals’ access and use mass data at scale at the speed of their business.”

Pricing and Availability

Pricing ranges from $995 for a two-drive direct attach RAID configuration, $19,995 for larger network storage hardware deployed solution configurations, to $10 per-month, per-terabyte including Seagate’s Lyve Cloud storage-as-a-service solution. All bundles feature Seagate’s unmatched value, performance, and data security, with a search and management layer provided by Axle AI 2021.

Axle AI Goes Beyond Video

For April, we’re highlighting some of our team’s favorite features — some you may know about, and some you may not! These are different aspects of Axle AI with one thing in common: they all make it easier for you and your team to work with video, audio and graphics, whether you’re in the office or working remotely. This week, let’s talk about different types of media in Axle AI…

Axle AI makes it radically simple… to work with non-video files

Axle AI is known for “radically simple video search,” but we don’t stop at video! Axle supports a wide range of media file types from images and audio files to PDFs. Axle creates different preview types depending on the original file format; for example, PDFs appear as a thumbnail preview of the first page, and in player view you can preview each page of the document. Audio files feature a waveform preview. For Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign and text documents, a thumbnail preview is not generated, but users can still create and search by custom metadata fields for these types of files.

Customize your Axle AI system with logos

This spring, we’re highlighting some of our team’s favorite features — some you may know about, and some you may not! These are different aspects of axle AI with one thing in common: they all make it easier for you and your team to work with video, audio and graphics, whether you’re in the office or working remotely.

?This week, let’s talk about logos…

Axle AI makes it radically simple… to customize your axle system with your logo

The Axle AI logo on the login screen is a familiar sight to most users. Did you know that logo, and the one on your homepage, can be customized for each of your axle users? Admin users can add the logo for your organization in place of the default axle logo, or set different logos for different departments or clients so each user has an axle interface customized for them. Logos can be customized for light and dark mode, and easily changed in the Appearance tab of the Administrator pages.

Wildcard searches make it simple to find metadata

This month we’re highlighting some of our team’s favorite features — some you may know about, and some you may not! These are different aspects of Axle AI with one thing in common: they all make it easier for you and your team to work with video, audio and graphics, whether you’re in the office or working remotely.
?
This week, let’s talk about using wildcard searches…

Axle AI makes it radically simple… to find metadata

Axle’s metadata fields and advanced search panel help users create nearly endless search parameters for their media. Sometimes, however, it’s helpful to search for something as simple as whether a chosen field has data or does not. This is where wildcard searches come in handy – by using an asterisk in place of data in the advanced search panel, users can easily find media files where a chosen metadata field is either populated, or empty.

Axle AI receives investment from Stadia Ventures

World’s leading sports tech accelerator brings spotlight to media search startup and Future of Work for Video segment

BOSTON, MA, USA, April 1, 2021 — Axle AI, the leader in bringing radical simplicity to video search and collaboration, announced that it has received an investment from the prestigious Stadia Ventures, a sports venture capital firm and accelerator based in St. Louis. The investment, as well as a recent rash of acquisitions in the Future of Work for Video space (9 in the last 2 quarters, with acquirers including Apple, Quantum and Telestream) highlight Axle’s leadership in this rapidly growing market segment.

Founded in 2012, Axle’s mission has always been to provide radically simple, affordable media search software that works within standard web browsers and supports nearly any type of local and cloud storage. During 2020, the rapid adoption of remote work in the media industry due to COVID-19 has meant tremendous growth of the Future of Work space for media applications and uptake of the company’s software, which has now been deployed at over 650 sites worldwide.

In addition, Axle AI’s new SaaS pricing options, with bundles starting as low as $395 per month or $495 per month for leasing deals including HPE or Apple application server hardware, have brought on a new wave of adopters who are able to manage and search their high-resolution media via web browser for the first time. Cloud and hybrid cloud deployments of the software are also increasingly common, as the company’s Linux VM (virtual machine) version can be run in a number of cloud and private network environments.

In 2020, Axle announced a series of key partnerships with publicly-held storage vendors including NetApp, Dropbox and Infortrend, and privately-held vendors such as Qumulo, Spectralogic, Symply, Galileo Digital ACNC, and mLogic. The company has also rolled out integrations with the three major video editing platforms – Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and Apple Final Cut Pro X – representing a formidable Future of Work ecosystem for the video industry.

Industry analyst Larry Jordan said: “axleai.com made its initial mark by providing easy to use, extensible and shareable media asset management (MAM) software for media creators. But, as the acquisition by Quantum makes clear, the market is far bigger than just M&E. The world tells stories using pictures. Every company in every industry is shifting to visual communications using digital images. As the numbers of visual images we need to label, track and share explode, companies like Axle AI become even more valuable and necessary.”

“We are thrilled to welcome the Axle team to the Stadia family of companies”, said Joe Pimmel, Managing Director of Stadia Ventures. “At a time when video content in sports and eSports is being produced at massive scale, Axle’s simple and scalable approach will lend itself to strong growth opportunities. We look forward to working closely with Sam and his colleagues.”

“Stadia Ventures’ investment is strategic”, said Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI. “It clearly demonstrates the importance of the Future of Work for Video space, and the strategic importance of Axle AI’s core video search and workflow automation offerings”

Archive to BlackPearl with Axle AI and Spectra Logic

It’s a new year and we have even more features to share with you in 2021! This month, we’re highlighting some of our team’s favorite features — some you may know about, and some you may not! These are different aspects of Axle AI with one thing in common: they all make it easier for you and your team to work with video, audio and graphics, whether you’re in the office or working remotely.
?
This week, let’s cover how Axle integrates with one of our archive partners…

Axle AI makes it radically simple… to archive with Spectra Logic

Axle AI has a direct integration with Spectra Logic archive, enabling users to archive to BlackPearl via RioBroker software. By creating a RioBroker agent within Axle, users can select media to archive directly from the Axle interface. Users can take advantage of the power of BlackPearl’s internal disk cache with access to the huge range of Spectra Logic libraries on the back of BlackPearl.

“One of the benefits of Axle and BlackPearl is the use of the disk cache to radically speed up the archiving process.” – Neil Blake, EAME Sales

Why Axle AI is the indie leader of remote media search during Covid19

Major industry shift as competitor Square Box Systems (CatDV) is acquired by Quantum (NASDAQ: QMCO)

Upstart axleai.com is now the leader in storage-agnostic media search software, after Quantum Corporation’s announcement yesterday that they have acquired industry veteran Square Box Systems, developers of CatDV MAM software. Founded in 2012, Axle’s mission has always been to provide radically simple, affordable media search software that works within standard web browsers and supports nearly any type of local and cloud storage. During 2020, the rapid adoption of remote work in the media space due to COVID-19 has meant rapid uptake of the company’s products, which have now been deployed at over 650 sites worldwide.

In addition, Axle AI’s new SaaS pricing options, with bundles starting as low as $295 per month including HPE or Apple application server hardware, have brought on a new wave of adopters who are able to manage and search their high-resolution media via web browser for the first time. Cloud and hybrid cloud deployments of the software are also increasingly common, as the company’s Linux VM (virtual machine) version can be run in a number of cloud and private network enviroments.

Quantum’s acquisition of Square Box is part of a larger M&A trend in the Future of Work space for media, where two significant deals – Smartsheets acquiring Brandfolder for $155m, and Apple acquiring Spanish video search company Vilynx for a rumored $50m – occurred earlier this quarter. Yet buttressed by its recent business successes, Axle AI is committed to remaining independent.

In recent months, axleai.com has announced a series of key partnerships with publicly-held storage vendors including NetApp, Dropbox and Infortrend, and privately-held vendors such as Qumulo, Spectralogic, Symply, Galileo Digital ACNC, Cloudian, mLogic and Backblaze. The company has also rolled out integrations with the three major video editing platforms – Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and Apple Final Cut Pro X. Put together, it’s a formidable Future of Work ecosystem for the video industry.

Industry analyst Larry Jordan said: “Axle AI made its initial mark by providing easy to use, extensible and shareable media asset management (MAM) software for media creators. But, as the acquisition by Quantum makes clear, the market is far bigger than just M&E. The world tells stories using pictures. Every company in every industry is shifting to visual communications using digital images. As the numbers of visual images we need to label, track and share explode, companies like Axle AI become even more valuable and necessary.”

axleai.com’s growing list of hardware and software partnerships will no doubt be a strategic asset as it benefits from the rapid rise of video collaboration (heightened by much more remote work during the COVID pandemic), increasingly powerful AI and ML technologies to search and manage that video, and the emergence of 5G and satellite networks that make high-speed connectivity more widely available.

The company’s platform consists of 3 core products:

  • axleai.com 2020.2, its flagship remote video search tool featuring browser access and integrations with leading video editing tools
  • Connectr, its breakthrough workflow tool that lets teams create timesaving automations via drag-and-drop
  • ascribe.ai, its integrated speech transcription product that makes large amounts of video searchable easily

“Yesterday’s announcement is an industry watershed”, said Sam Bogoch, CEO of axleai.com. “It clearly demonstrates the relevance and strategic importance of video search and workflow automation, while demonstrating to both storage and application companies why they should have a strong and committed partner in this space going forward. We believe we’re ideally positioned to be that partner.”

Axle AI adds remote work solution for Avid Media Composer

Powerful, affordable Pro option lets Avid editors tag, search and transcribe in a browse

Axle AI, an industry-leading developer of software that makes video searchable, has announced a new Pro option for its axleai.com 2020 software that supports Avid’s Media Composer professional editing software. With the new Axle AI 2020 Pro module, Avid editors now have the powerful new capability of accessing both native Avid media and a wide range of other media remotely, through any standard web browser. This type of collaborative workflow has rapidly taken over from traditional in-person editing work since the advent of COVID-19, and is likely to remain a fixture in the industry moving forward. Axle AI 2020 already provides workflows for Adobe’s Premiere Pro CC application and Apple’s Final Cut Pro X.

In addition to cataloging and natively representing the Op-Atom media, Axle AI 2020 Pro also includes the capability to export AAF sequence files to the Media Composer editor, so that collections of subclips from within axleai.com can be directly placed on the Media Composer timeline. In addition, the software creates low-resolution H.264 proxies of MXF Op-Atom media which can then be processed by a range of available AI analysis engines supported in axleai.com 2020, including Axle’s own Axle Speech cloud service and third party AI services such as Microsoft’s Video Indexer (for face recognition, object recognition and onscreen character recognition) and Speechmatics’ transcription engine.

Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI, said “It has always been our mission to bring the power of remote video search, collaboration and transcription to an ever-wider group of creative teams. Avid’s Media Composer software is a flagship solution used broadly by top editors in Hollywood as well as the wider broadcast industry. We’re delighted to introduce support for this application and its file formats and workflows” The software works with Avid’s Nexis shared storage systems as well as with a wide range of third party NAS and SAN storage. It also includes integrated upload and download capabilities for moving large media files to and from remote locations.

axleai.com’s systems are installed at over 600 postproduction teams worldwide, including at dozens of prominent national and regional broadcasters. Gerry Field, Vice President of technology at American Public Television, said “Axle made it possible to get a system appropriately scaled for what we need, and for the resources that we have. The two equal parts are cost and complexity. There are a lot of asset management products in the market that, particularly for my needs, are tremendously overbuilt. We needed something that could be installed easily and give us access, quickly, to the content that we need to see.” I was able to get it spun up and operational inside of three days and get Axle AI into the adoption cycle.”

A recent article highlighted APT’s remote workflows: www.tinyurl.com/aptcovid. Axle AI is also hosting a panel discussion on “Remote video workflows under COVID – what’s working and what isn’t” together with its cloud storage partner Backblaze on Thursday, June 18th at 1PM ET – register at http://www.tinyurl.com/axleaibb. Gerry Field will be joined by Scott Salik of Youngevity (both teams use Axle ai and Backblaze) to discuss their strategies and toolsets for adapting to remote work. Finally, investment in axleai.com is now available to individual investors via Republic; http://republic.co/axle-ai.

Pricing and Availability

The axleai.com 2020 Pro solution is available from $4,750 for two users including one year of remote access and software updates. The software is available to run on either MacOS or Linux servers; the Linux version can also be run as a virtual machine in a Windows Server environment. In addition, one free hour of Axle Speech transcription is included and additional hours can be purchased in blocks of 10 hours ($19.00) and 100 hours ($170.00). Subscription Interfaces to Microsoft Video Indexer AI-based tagging and Speechmatics transcription engines are available at additional cost.

Connectr AI 2020 Makes Video Workflow Automation Simple, Affordable

Cross-platform app from Axle AI designed to easily support standard media tools

Axle AI, the leader in bringing radical simplicity to video search and collaboration, announced immediate availability of Connectr.AI 2020, the latest version of its revolutionary new software which lets media teams automate workflows via a drag-and-drop graphical user interface; no programming skills required. These teams are typically at broadcasters, postproduction houses, corporate settings, universities, non-profits, and houses of worship. All frequently have a need to automate any combination of ingest, transcode, web publishing and archiving steps to accelerate workflow and reduce the amount of manual labor required in the face of increasing amounts of media being handled.

The software is available for MacOS and Linux (the Linux version can also be run as a virtual machine on Windows), and is shipping immediately. Pricing starts at $3,895 for a MacOS version supporting up to 4 concurrent workflows, with one day of professional services for workflow design included. The new version of Connectr adds greater capability and simplified operation, such as multi-button selection menus and progress bars. Examples of Connectr users include Spanish telecomm integrator Telefonica, leading Italian broadcaster MediaSet, and NextVR, a California-based leading-edge sports VR company.

The new 2020 release of Connectr includes a number of major enhancements:

1. interactive user interface widgets for menu selection, progress bars and more
2. improved support for FTP file transfers including upload and download functionality
3. enhanced image processing support including the ability to apply filters
4. tighter integration with the company’s flagship Axle AI 2020 video search application, including support for operations on subclips

Open cross-platform workflow, for everyone

“We want to users the ability to set up their own powerful media workflows” said Sam Bogoch, Axle AI’s CEO. “With Connectr, Axle AI is putting a powerful workflow solution into the market at an affordable price, and opening it up to resellers and integrators as well as end users. It is also offered to OEM partners who may license and relabel under their own brands,” Bogoch said.

The video industry has scores, if not hundreds of highly capable specialist vendors and a handful of larger companies with broad product lines. Typically, integrating an automated workflow involving two or more of these vendors is beyond reach for most customers, blocking access to greater efficiencies across the entire media creation process. Connectr.AI 2020 is intended to break this deadlock, allowing multi-way connectivity and integration to propagate over time, well beyond the footprint of single-vendor solutions.

A cross-vendor ecosystem

The Connectr.AI 2020 software includes a graphical front end, Connectr Designer, which makes constructing a workflow a simple drag-and-drop process. Software and hardware vendors, integrators and other technically proficient customers are able to create their own modules to plug into Connectr, becoming part of large and rapidly growing workflow ecosystem. Modules can either be shared for free on open source code repositories, or compiled and sold commercially by vendors. The system supports a wide range of interfaces, from REST APIs to Java code and command lines. It also supports notifications via either email or SMS messaging.

Axle AI is encouraging development of Connectr Modules from companies who offer the following:

· Ingest software and hardware
· Playout servers
· NAS and SAN storage
· QC software
· Artificial intelligence/Machine learning tools
· Transcoding software

Axle AI, AI Powered MAM At American Public Television

American public television works from home on syndicated content using a browser interface

When the staff of American Public Television, like many media companies, faced the prospect of abruptly working from home due to coronavirus measures, they were ready. APT is a syndicator; a leading non-profit organization whose mission is to find, curate, license, and distribute content to public television stations. Operating with a modest staff, they’ve amassed a current and legacy catalog of hundreds of series and single-event programs encompassing documentaries, education, travel, performance, news and current affairs programs ranging from Lidia’s Kitchen to Rick Steves’ Europe to Doc Martin and Midsomer Murders.

Just a few years ago, APT’s workflows were tied to physical media like tapes and hard drives.  Upon implementing Axle AI, they were able to economically transition to a browser-based, shared media workflow. So, when recently faced with COVID-19 work restrictions, they were able to swiftly navigate to a distributed approach almost overnight.  “Axle AI, as well as some of the other key network technologies we’ve implemented, like VPN and cloud storage, were the difference between being disconnected totally from our business due to COVID-19, and being able to operate nearly at regular capacity.” says APT Vice President of Technology Gerry Field.

A better way to screen

APT began to transition to digital distribution and file-based workflows, with the goal “to turn our screening rooms into ingest rooms, and move our screening functions right onto everybody’s desktop”.  Put off by the cost and complexity of MAM systems they investigated, Field and his team opted for Axle AI’s budget-friendly software, which takes advantage of industry standards and cost-effective storage to simplify networked video workflows.

If content comes in as files, great; if it comes in as tape, we ingest, and in either case create proxies for screening through Axle,” Gerry continued. Now, he added, “Anything being submitted to us is coming in as a file in a broadcast format.  We’ve broken away from limited on-prem ‘silos’ we had before, and extend access to more content at the desktop regardless of the location. Of course, this same capability has made it possible for us to handle the switch to a fully-remote workforce, which would have been unthinkable previously.”

Designed for easy adoption

“Most of all,Axle made it possible to get a system appropriately scaled for what we need, and for the resources that we have. The two equal parts are cost and complexity. There are a lot of asset management products in the market that, particularly for my needs, are tremendously overbuilt. We needed something that could be installed easily and give us access, quickly, to the content that we need to see.” I was able to get it spun up and operational inside of three days and get Axle AI into the adoption cycle. From there the biggest challenge was getting some of the people used to going to a screening room to screening in their browser, and building their confidence.”

The fact that Axle is not technically demanding was very important: “APT has good talented and technically aware staff but we’re not the kind of company that has a deep engineering department, or a stable of editors” Gerry added. “I could possibly do deeper, more interesting things with a more expensive system, but my experience with things like that is they sound good, but wind up being a boat anchor.”

Expansion and growth

As APT moves to a new public television member station interconnection system, Axle has been integrated with APT back-end business systems, so licensing and media access rights information are linked to Axle. “That’s important as APT owns very little programming; it’s almost all licensed for distribution under contracts. Under the new system, “material comes into our cloud, is synced from our cloud to local storage and Axle makes proxy copies for screening and tracking.”

Gerry has seen APT’s use of Axle AI grow, especially for review of underwriting spots and to help suppliers in negotiating with underwriters. “In addition to full length programs, we’re now including promos, sizzle reels, clips, and other promotional material related to the program.” Gerry said the staff is now using Axle to make programming notes, “extending desktop screening access to collaboration and sharing comments about the content as well.”

Radically Simple Resonates

Gerry cites Axle’s ‘radically simple’ principle as a key reason for adopting it. “It’s one of the things that got me interested. That, and the experience and credibility of the founders in both developing media asset management systems and knowing how they were actually used.” Both of those factors paid off for American Public Television, letting them affordably do more, expand their capabilities, and gain new efficiencies to find, curate, license, and distribute content to public television audiences. The recent switch from a single work location to a work-from-home team approach required under COVID-19 public health mandates worldwide, turned out to be achievable almost overnight due to Axle AI’s affordable, accessible browser-based HD/4K workflows.

Axle AI AI-Powered MAM Makes Remote Video Work for Pro Teams

Powerful new software offers remote browser access to high-res video, now with low monthly pricing

Our 2020 release brings huge value to video teams who need remote workflows immediately, right out of the box. You can browse, search, tag and transcribe your high-res material from wherever you are.”

— Sam Bogoch, CEO, Axle AI

EINPresswire.com/ — Axle AI1, the leader in radically simple video search software, is announcing immediate availability of its flagship Axle AI 2020 product for media teams. The software addresses four major needs in the market:

1. Integrated remote access. Axle’s software has always been browser-based; however, many of its customers have chosen to use its video search and Premiere integration features on premise. The 2020 release offers native remote access, to accommodate the huge shift in workforce location as a result of COVID-19.

2. Affordable monthly subscription pricing model. Depending on configuration, Axle AI 2020 is priced from $199 per month up to $999 per month, which can include subscription-based automated transcripts of video using the Axle Speech transcription engine. Previously, Axle AI licenses entailed the up-front purchase of a software license, a model the company will continue to make available.

3. Integration with Adobe’s industry-leading Premiere Pro CC application, which now supports both
transcript-aware timeline editing and seamless relinking of high-resolution media based on preliminary edits performed with Axle AI’s proxy media.

4. Robust, high-speed file transfer to and from the Axle AI 2020 server for the remote workforce, now included with each installation.

Sam Bogoch, Axle AIi’s CEO, said “Our 2020 release brings a huge amount of value to video teams who need remote workflows immediately, right out of the box. Being able to browse, search, tag and transcribe your high-res material from wherever you are is a huge advantage over legacy video solutions, which often only work locally.” The product lets media teams, broadcasters, post-production houses, and corporations take immediate advantage of Axle AI’s remote browser and file transfer capabilities. Newly-distributed media workforces can now access all their content – even 4K and 8K footage – remotely using standard web browsers. Axle AI 2020 does this by making low-resolution H.264 proxies of all video files, which are playable in any standard web browser; it also generates browsable proxies of audio files, image files and PDFs.

Axle AI 2020 offers a number of high-end capabilities as software modules, including native processing of RED’s R3D file format, archiving to a range of cloud and tape back ends including Amazon S3, BackBlaze, MS Azure and Wasabi, Archiware P5, XenData, Front Porch DIVA, and StorageDNA. The system can also be used with a number of video capture/ingest solutions such as Softron’s MovieRecorder, Cinedeck, and MOG. Like the core Axle 2020 software, these can now be priced either as one-time purchases or as part of a SaaS subscripton.

More than 600 global media organizations already rely on Axle AI 2019 media management software for comprehensive video search, AI-driven tagging and workflow automation, letting them automatically tag, transcribe, search and repurpose their content, from small media libraries to large collections at petabyte scale. Unlike nearly every other media management solution and especially legacy MAMs, Axle’s radically simple approach lets its customers simply turn on the software and immediately scan their existing volumes, folders and working file formats. Media are displayed within a browser interface that works across Macs, PCs, iOS, Android and Axle’s integrated panel for Adobe Premiere Pro CC.

These solutions combine Axle AI 2019 ‘radically simple’ media management software and the Spectra BlackPearl® Converged Storage System. By applying artificial intelligence techniques to all media content on BlackPearl storage system, Axle AI software automatically identifies and tags content, so that even non-technical users will easily and instantly find content by image description, speech-to-text, and face recognition, and can also review, comment, select and share media. The BlackPearl storage system itself is able to transparently and seamlessly utilize any combination of online, nearline, archive and cloud storage. Both companies are exhibiting in Hall 7 at this week’s IBC Conference in Amsterdam, stands 7.D33 (Axle AI) and 7.B50 (Spectra Logic).

Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI said, “We’re perhaps best known for offering ai-driven media search for small and midsize teams, yet are increasingly managing very large amounts of content storage, often for major projects or episodic shows.  When founded in 2012, we expected to target media collections in the tens of terabytes, but we’ve progressively scaled our platform and leveraged powerful web-scale technologies like Elastic Search, so that today Axle AI is commonly used to manage, tag and search hundreds of terabytes to petabytes.”

The solutions combine Axle AI 2019 with Spectra’s powerful BlackPearl Converged Storage System including the BlackPearl RioBroker interface and API. BlackPearl RioBroker is a data mover that resides on the network and drives reliable, high-performance migration of media and other files between Spectra’s BlackPearl platform. Hossein ZiaShakeri, Senior VP of Business Development and Alliances at Spectra, said, “These solution bundles are further evidence that BlackPearl is providing industry leadership in cost-effective object-based storage for media. We are delighted that Axle AI was able to leverage our BlackPearl RioBroker APIs and next-generation approach to media storage, and even more delighted to work with Axle AI to begin offering AI-driven solutions and search capability to the media storage marketplace.”

Bogoch added, “With BlackPearl rapidly becoming a standard-setter for a modern archival platform in the market, it’s a great time for us to provide integration for this simple-yet-sophisticated solution to help manage and preserve customers’ growing content archives. With these very affordable, preconfigured bundles, we’re teaming up to remove the guesswork from making petabytes of video searchable.”

“The Impact of AI on the Media” panel in Santa Monica

Santa Monica, August 12 – Axle AI, Inc will be partnering with Nvidia, Digital Domain and the Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs Association to host a panel at Santa Monica’s Expert Dojo the evening of August 19th. The panel consists of Darren Handler of Digital Domain’s Digital Humans group, Rick Grandy from Nvidia, and Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI. The event is from 6:30-8:30pm at Santa Monica’s Expert Dojo (located in the Santa Monica Place mall, directly across from the 3rd Street Promenade), and drinks and snacks will be provided. Signup is at https://tinyurl.com/ai819la; $20 in advance, $30 at the door.

About the Event: The $15 billion AI industry is taking hold in Hollywood transforming every aspect of the media and entertainment business.

Trend watchers are projecting large impacts on the world economy for AI and machine learning technology, with estimates as high as $15 billion worldwide. One of the segments where AI’s impact is starting to be felt is the media industry, partly because video and other media files, as well as their searchable metadata, are already ripe for analysis by AI algorithms. Online providers such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime are already using AI-driven recommendation engines to suggest content to their subscribers. Add in the huge universe of ad tech, where consumption and viewership are closely analyzed and fed back into the content being provided, and you can see that an end-to-end AI revolution in media is already underway.

Our panel of seasoned media technology executives will cover the current state of the art of AI in media, discuss where things are headed, and provide their thoughts during an open exchange with audience members. Panelists:

Sam Bogoch, CEO, axleai.com – Axle is one of the companies spearheading adoption of AI technology in the media space. The company’s software allows media teams to rapidly search and select relevant video content based on AI-driven transcription, face and object recognition, and powerful search tools. Axle AI has over 550 customers worldwide including WB (the Ellen De Generis Show), Paramount, NBCU and Turner/CNN. Sam was previously Director of Product Management at Avid, overseeing its Interplay and Media Central product lines.

Rick Grandy, Senior Solutions Architect, NVidia – with over two decades of experience in visual effects including “Transformers 2”, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and over 30 motion pictures, Rick brings massive real-world experience to applying Nvidia technology to AI applications in media. NVIDIA‘s invention of the GPU in 1999 sparked the growth of the PC gaming market, redefined modern computer graphics and revolutionized parallel computing. More recently, GPU deep learning ignited modern AI — the next era of computing — with the GPU acting as the brain of computers, robots and self-driving cars that can perceive and understand the world.

Darren Hendler, Director of Digital Domains’ Digital Human Group – a 20+ year veteran of the visual effects industry, where he has contributed his talents to over 18 feature films. Most recently Darren completed work on Marvel’s Avengers: End Game (2019), where he was responsible for overseeing creature development as well as developing new technology to bring Thanos to life. Darren and his group are responsible for spearheading new technology to create photo-real creatures and digital humans across all platforms.

We Partner With REELY for Sports Video AI Capability

Software can analyze game footage and auto-detect scoring plays, highlights and exciting moments; companies are announcing the solution at NAB Show in Las Vegas, booth SL15116.

Las Vegas, April 9, 2019 – Axle AI, Inc. (NAB booth SL15116) is announcing immediate availability of sports logging for Axle AI 2019, based on the REELY platform, which automatically creates highlights in real-time using a proprietary artificial intelligence engine. Conferences, leagues, and teams in both traditional sports and esports can now quickly and easily create highlights and rank the quality of content utilizing REELY’s proprietary HYPE score. Editors no longer have to sift through hours of video to find that one special moment. “Partnering with Axle AI gives us the ability to deploy our software both on-premise and in the cloud,” said Ian Stephens, Chief Marketing Officer and Co-Founder of REELY. “Sports content creators and owners – including leagues, teams, venues and broadcasters – are looking for ways to rapidly and affordably tag their game footage. Axle AI is providing a radically simple, on-premise solution letting us reach a whole new range of customers.”

Axle AI 2019 customers will be able to select the sports logging option, with their choice of on-premise or cloud analysis. These two options can be implemented with any on-premise Axle AI media management server. The service is priced per hour of sports or esports that is analyzed; there is also a flat fee for the on-premise server in the case of the on premise option. Unlike traditional MAMs, Axle AI is a radically simple solution that can be deployed without custom engineering; complete systems can be purchased for well under $10,000 including hardware and installation. These also work with nearly any form of network storage including standard NASs and SANs.

Today more than ever, the demands of content owners have grown far beyond the ability to deliver live and on-demand streams. REELY focuses on making the creation of short-form content incredibly easy. The fully automated auto-clipping system, with its integrated HYPE score, generates metadata that populate Axle AI’s database and user interface, putting the power in the hands of editors to quickly find, rank, and distribute content. Axle AI is the exclusive on-premise licensee for the REELY solution. The capability is available for delivery to customers beginning May 1st, 2019.

How NetApp Storage and Axle AI MAM elevate media teams

Media asset management with ratings
Solutions target high capacity and quick access needs for rising corporate and education video markets

Los Vegas, April 5, 2019 – Arrow Distribution announced immediate availability of a range of integrated solutions for corporate and university video teams based on NetApp storage systems and software from Axle AI, Inc. The three industry leaders have joined forces to provide complete solutions not only store, but to manage and provide instant user access to hundreds of terabytes of video content. Both of the bundle suppliers have a presence at next week’s NAB show in Las Vegas: Axle AI is exhibiting at booth SL15116, and NetApp is at S116LMR.

There is a worldwide explosion of video content. Over 100 Exabytes (100 million terabytes) of storage are now devoted to media storage annually, and approximately 250,000 video teams are responsible for capturing, editing and managing this content. Traditional uses of network storage, such as email archiving or corporate records are increasingly migrating to the cloud.  At the same time, video files have become large and numerous enough, and ongoing capture is so pervasive, that uploading them to the cloud is often impractical.

Arrow, NetApp and Axle AI are making the solutions available in three configurations 100 terabytes of usable storage space (VM100), 200 terabytes (VM200) and 400 terabytes (VM400).  All three configurations include NetApp’s robust, industry-leading storage architecture, with high performance 10 Gigabit Ethernet network interfaces and NetApp’s powerful redundant FAS architecture.

Each configuration also includes an Intel-based application server running a 5-user version of Axle AI 2019, the company’s ‘radically simple’ video search software.  The software includes a browser front end allowing multiple users to tag, catalog and search their media files, as well as a range of AI-driven options for automatically cataloging and discovering specific visual and audio attributes within those files.  Given the large amounts of video – often terabytes – that can be accumulated by a video team in a single shoot, this system allows rapid search and management of those files.

Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI, said “for years, customers have expressed the need for a simplified and cost-efficient way to store, search and manage their content.  Legacy solutions for broadcasters have been expensive and complex, but Arrow’s bundles manage to bring state-of-the-art AI and MAM (media asset management) capabilities to the corporate and educational customers who most need them. With these bundles, we are able to provide a tailored solution through Arrow’s nationwide network of resellers, and meet the needs of video teams as well as the IT departments who serve them.”

Pricing and Availability
The 3 solutions, vm100, vm200 and vm400, are available immediately through Arrow’s national reseller network. Pricing is as follows:

Video Media Manager Entry – VM100 – $49,995 MSRP
Video Media Manager Midlevel – VM200 – $89,995 MSRP
Video Media Manager Enterprise – VM400 – $129,995 MSRP

Additional software upgrades include 5- and 50-user expansion packages, as well as Axle AI’s video metadata services including face recognition, object recognition, speech transcription and automated sports analysis, and Axle AI’s new Connectr™ workflow solution.

About NetApp
NetApp is the data authority for hybrid cloud. The company provides a full range of hybrid cloud data services that simplify management of applications and data across cloud and on-premises environments to accelerate digital transformation. Boston, April 4 – Today Axle AI, Inc. announced that it has integrated its unique ‘radically simple’ media management software with the Spectra Logic BlackPearl Converged Storage System. By applying artificial intelligence techniques to all media content on BlackPearl storage, Axle AI software automatically identifies and tags content, and even non-technical users can easily and instantly find content by image description, speech-to-text, and face recognition, and can also review, comment, select and share media. Equally, Axle AI customers can now gain the advantages of the BlackPearl storage system, a platform that is able to transparently and seamlessly utilize any combination of online, nearline, archive and cloud storage. Both companies are exhibiting at next week’s NAB Show in Las Vegas, booths SL15116 (Axle AI) and SL11516 (Spectra Logic).

Commenting on Axle AI integration with the Spectra Logic BlackPearl Storage System, Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI said: “We’ve come a long way in a short amount of time, both technologically and as a business. The integration is built around the powerful Spectra RioBroker interface and API. Spectra RioBroker is a data mover that sits on the network and drives reliable, high-performance copies of media and other files to and from Spectra Logic’s BlackPearl systems. Hossein ZiaShakeri, Senior VP of Business Development and Alliances at Spectra Logic, said, “Axle AI’s integration is further evidence that BlackPearl is providing industry leadership in cost-effective object storage for media. We are delighted that Axle AI was able to leverage our Spectra RioBroker APIs and next-generation approach to media storage.

Bogoch added “With BlackPearl rapidly becoming a standard-setter for a modern archival platform in the market, it’s a great time for us to provide this integration for an overall solution that’s simple yet sophisticated to help manage and preserve customers’ growing content archives. With the power of our AI search capabilities on managed assets, we expect to help our mutual customers almost immediately.”

Pricing and Availability
Complete solutions including Axle AI 2019 software, our BlackPearl support module, as well as required server appliances are available immediately starting at $19,995. Axle AI Announces Gear Solutions with Apple’s new Mac mini

Complete system streamlines video production with AI-based tagging, search, transcoding and workflow automation

Boston, October 31st – Continuing to address the largely unmet need for advanced video management tools for small to mid-sized teams, Axle AI, Inc. has announced the launch of Axle AI Gear™, an integrated system which combines new Apple Mac mini computing power with Axle AI’s browser-based, AI-capable media management, workflow and transcode software. True to the company’s ‘Radically Simple’ philosophy, Axle AI Gear combines state of the art auto-tagging and search with graphical workflow and transcoding tools designed for ease of use and broad accessibility.

Apple’s new Mac mini represents a breakthrough for the Axle AI customer base, now numbering over 500 creative sites worldwide, as well as tens of thousands of video teams worldwide who may be looking for video search and workflow tools. Axle AI sites include prominent broadcasters, post houses, sports venues and teams, universities, corporate video departments and houses of worship.  A recent profile of Bleacher Report exemplifies a larger site using more powerful Mac Pro and Linux systems to run Axle AI solutions.

In many cases, these customers have bought or repurposed Mac Pro systems to run Axle AI software, connecting them to their network storage to analyze and process media. Axle AI Gear represents a clear new value in the market, offering a complete software/hardware solution priced below what the hardware alone used to cost, with the added benefits of denser packaging and lower power consumption.

The system’s compact size also means that field deployments of Axle AI software are now a breeze, including on-set DIT (digital intermediate technician) uses right where the video is captured. A great example of this workflow is Jay Cooper, who captures and manages the video for Kenny Chesney’s tours and uses Axle AI software to tag and search the results.
The systems incorporate one or two of Apple’s powerful new Mac minis each equipped with 3.2GHz 6-core Intel i7 CPUs, 16GB of upgradable RAM, 256GB of SSD and 4 Terabytes of external hard disk storage, as well as a 10 Gigabit Ethernet network port.
The base configuration, Axle AI Gear 1, includes a single Mac mini running:
–        Axle AI 2018 AI-capable, browser-based media management software, with a 2 user license
–        Axle AI’s new Connectr workflow automation software
–        Apple’s Mac OS Mojave operating system

Users can log in to the system from any modern web browser. The system supports Windows PCs, Macs, iPads, iPhones and Android devices as browser clients.
The larger configuration, Axle Gear 2, includes 2 Mac minis – one running:
–        Axle AI 2018 AI-capable, browser-based media management software, with a 2 user license
–        Axle AI’s Advanced Transcode module with support for R3D and ARRI as well as other 4K formats
–        Apple’s Mac OS Mojave operating system
and a second Mac mini running:
–        Axle AI’s new Connectr workflow automation software
–        Apple’s Mac OS Mojave operating system

Axle AI Gear configurations are compatible with almost any networked storage, including SAN, NAS, object/cloud and LTO tape technologies.

Pricing
Axle AI Gear 1 is priced from $5,995. Axle AI Gear 2 is priced from $9,995. Multiple options are available from Axle AI and its resellers to expand both systems’ I/O and their working storage. Axle AI Gear comes with a one-year warranty on all hardware, and a one-year contract for maintenance and updates on all software.

Axle AI Announces Support For Oracle Front Porch DIVArchive

Axle AI integrates Oracle Front Porch DIVArchive

Integration partnership with CloudFirst.io to support next-generation archives

BOSTON — Axle AI, the leader in bringing artificial intelligence to video workflows, integrates the availability of a new software module connecting its systems to Oracle’s Front Porch DIVArchive, the most broadly deployed archive platform today.  The software provides archiving and restore capabilities directly to and from DIVArchive via Axle AI’s radically simple browser interface. It also adds a new queue management user interface in the browser that allows users to manage archiving and restore jobs.

The Front Porch DIVArchive integration is available immediately from Axle and its resellers worldwide.  Pricing of complete software packages, including the integration and Axle AI software, starts around $10,000 US for MacOS and $15,000 for Linux (VM deployment).  An interface module is also available for Axle AI’s Hub appliance, priced at $7,995.

In addition to supporting existing DIVArchive sites, this integration facilitates two future migration scenarios: 1) from legacy MAM and DIVAdirector software to Axle AI, and 2) from Front Porch DIVArchive to a next-generation Software Defined Archive (SDA) platform either on-premise or to the cloud.  Axle AI will be demonstrating the advanced solution in Hall 7 at the IBC conference in Amsterdam, stand 7.D33.

To help customers with future archive strategies, Axle has partnered with CloudFirst.io, an innovative consulting and software development provider specialized in building next-generation SDA infrastructures (on-premise, cloud and hybrid), modernizing the tiering of enterprise media workflows, and assisting clients in efficient large-scale migration of media assets from legacy archive solutions.

Brian Campanotti, CEO of CloudFirst, notes that his company has worked extensively with legacy archive clients looking to analyze, shape, define and execute next-generation archive strategies regardless of current or future infrastructure choices.

“We are delighted to work with axleai.com in helping these customers develop forward-looking archive strategies. We are assisting companies in migrating their valuable asset infrastructures to our next-generation SDA platform and reinventing access to assets by leveraging axleai.com’s powerful, ai-driven analysis tools,” he said. “When considering the future of valuable asset repositories, it is essential to select forward-thinking and responsive platforms to best comprehend, control, protect and access media assets.”

Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI, added, “Brian and his team are a phenomenal resource and have worked with many of the world’s top global broadcasters and media organizations.  We look forward to teaming up with CloudFirst on meeting customers’ needs for analyzing, migrating, managing and modernizing their media repositories.”

Axle AI and CloudFirst will hold a joint webinar on August 22nd to introduce the integrated solution, and will be jointly available for customer meetings in New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere during July and August.  The webinar will be held at 9AM EST and 2PM EST – the signup pages are at https://axle.webinarninja.com/webinars/47517/register (9AM) and https://axle.webinarninja.com/webinars/47518/register (2PM.)

How Axle AI 2018 pairs with Quantum StorNext Xcellis storage

Axle AI launches Axle 2018 for Quantum’s StorNext- powered Xcellis storage

Radically simple video tag-search-share solution available as an embedded application within Xcellis

Portland, Oregon – March 29, 2018 –Axle AI, the leader in software that radically simplifies tagging, searching, and sharing video, announced availability of its Axle 2018 software for Quantum’s StorNext- powered Xcellis Scale-Out NAS and Xcellis Foundation storage solutions. The software runs directly on Quantum storage systems and unlike other versions of Axle’s software, Axle 2018 for Xcellis does not require a dedicated Mac or Linux appliance on the network. It includes a 5 user license, which can be expanded in 5 and 50 user increments, ai search for premise or remote auto-tagging of media, and powerful transcode software modules from AWS Elemental.

Among dozens of Quantum storage solution customers relying on Axle software to accelerate workflow, share media, and empower colleagues are a top global accounting firm, a leading Dutch broadcaster, an online publisher of web news for millennials, and a major sporting goods retailer.  Based on feedback from these and other Quantum-Axle sites, it became clear that there was an opportunity to provide a more closely coupled solution where Axle’s radically simple tools could run directly on the Quantum storage hardware, simplifying setup to merely enabling a software license on a new or previously deployed Quantum Xcellis system.

Quantum’s Dynamic Application Environment, or DAE, provided Axle AI with the right technology to implement this type of integrated solution.  DAE, technically known as a hypervisor, provides a virtual machine (VM) environment in which customers and integrators can now install additional operating systems to run third-party applications. Once licensed and configured, the DAE feature allows applications installed in the VM to run in a completely independent environment, while also accessing StorNext resources and shares as needed.  DAE provides resource usage safeguards to ensure that StorNext, running on the host system, has adequate CPU and RAM resources.

Pricing for Axle 2018 for Quantum’s Xcellis storage:

  1. Axle 2018 for Xcellis, base 5 user license – $5,995 (purchase)
  2. Axle 2018 for Xcellis, additional 5 user licenses – $2,995 (purchase)
  3. Axle 2018 for Xcellis, additional 50 user licenses – $16,995 (purchase)
  4. Axle-integrated AWS Elemental transcode module, per 4 CPU cores – $4,000 (purchase)
  5. Axle AI on-premise machine learning module for object and face tagging – $500/month (billed quarterly)
  6. Axle AI cloud gateway for Microsoft, Google or Amazon auto-tagging – each $250/month (billed quarterly)

All configurations of Axle 2018 for Xcellis are available immediately from Axle AI and its resellers worldwide.  Axle AI and Quantum will be available to answer questions at the NAB show in Las Vegas (Quantum booth SL8511 and Axle AI booth SL15116).

“Axle AI has shown the market that it’s possible to bring a simple approach to even advanced media management functions, and the integration with our Dynamic Application Environment on Xcellis is a further step in making powerful capabilities available in a simple-to-deploy package,” said Anniek Snauwaert, director of technology alliances for Quantum.  “The tight integration of Axle AI and Xcellis really gives our customers an elegant solution for their media workflows.”

Axle AI launches Microsoft Video Indexer integration

Axle AI affordable automated visual tagging of video lifts productivity; eliminates key barrier to adoption

Axle AI, leaders in harnessing the power of artificial intelligence for video workgroups, today announced immediate availability of integration between their revolutionary Axle AI software and Microsoft Video Indexer. Axle AI now uses the Video Indexer service to automatically tag entire video files, and segments of those videos, with descriptions of the visual contents of those files and text transcriptions of the spoken content of the videos. Axle AI will be demonstrated at the Axle Video stand, Hall 7.F04, at this week’s IBC conference.

Axle AI represents a breakthrough in capability for small and midsize video teams. Previously, organizations had to purchase expensive systems costing tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, then spend further on labor to manually tag the material that they planned to search. While Axle AI preserves the option of manual tagging and highlighting of clips, the majority of the up-front work is done by machine intelligence, at far lower cost and much higher speed than was possible in the past. This has the effect of making tens or hundreds of terabytes of previously un-searchable footage, immediately searchable.

Video Indexer is able to automatically compute a variety of key information about video footage, including using facial recognition to identify who is in a given video segment, what objects are in the segment, and also what words and sentences are being spoken. The Axle AI integration pulls the resulting metadata from the Video Indexer service, and displays It in Axle’s radically simple media management UI, which works with all major web browsers.

Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle Video, stated “Microsoft has provided a complete and robust cloud AI back end, including object and scene recognition, face recognition, and speech to text conversion. By feeding all of the metadata generated by these tools into our simple, approachable front end, we can provide our customers with the key insights into their media that will make them vastly more productive.”

Kunal Malhotra, Product Marketing Manager, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Corp. said, “We are pleased to see Axle AI benefit from the visual management capabilities of Microsoft Video Indexer. Axle’s focus on making application management capabilities widely available supports our mutual customers in a variety of industries by adding value to their video content.”

Benefits

Studies show that up to 40% of video postproduction time is spent simply finding the best footage for a given project. In addition, inability to find the right clip can often result in expensive re-shoots (B-roll segments for example) causing costs to escalate even further. By solving these problems, Axle has large benefits for the over 250,000 small and midsize postproduction teams worldwide.

How it works

Axle AI’s cataloging engine first makes low-resolution versions of each file, and the resulting versions are uploaded to Microsoft Azure Storage and processing systems in the cloud for further analysis. The metadata generated by this analysis is returned seamlessly to Axle’s solution, which both places it in an open database back end, and puts it at users’ fingertips using advanced Elastic Search technology.

Pricing and availability

The Axle AI module which connects to Video Indexer is available immediately for Axle customers with Microsoft Azure accounts; pricing of the interface is $1,995 (purchase with first year’s updates) or $99/month SaaS pricing as part of Axle’s new cloud offerings. Microsoft Azure charges for the Video Indexer service are assessed separately.
